Nevertheless it would be very helpful if this was fixed. Please consider fixing 
this bug for one of the next intermediate releases like 2.4.1 or so.

With a Mozilla xul tree, keeping track of what nodes are expanded is something that the nsITreeView has to do. (A nsITreeView is similar to a GtkTreeModel.)  This may make this easier to implement. (Just a guess - I not very familiar with the gtk code.)
