Hi, I can confirm that this bug still exists in GNOME 2.10 on ubuntu hoary-preview. Thanks, Steve
Actually, I guess most users would expect screen to be locked anyway, with or without xscreensaver, so no error shoud be given, but screen must be locked in the way it is done with Typing Break from Keyboard preferences - greyed out and some kind of logo could/should be given. If mouse moves, give normal password dialog. It could be some kind of default screen locking method - if xscreensaver is not provided.
According to its developer, xscreensaver is not under active development anymore. It is unlikely that there will be any further active development. Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping - Please feel free to reopen this bug report in the future if anyone takes the responsibility for active development again.
