GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 77392
TeX files: mismatch between gnome-vfs.keys and gnome-vfs.mime
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
IN gnome-vfs.mime, TeX files have mime type text/x-tex. In gnome-vfs.keys, there is no text/x-tex; instead, it contains application/x-tex and text/tex. As a result, "File types and programs" capplet does not show any mime type corresponding to TeX files at all. I am not sure what the correct mime type for TeX files should be, but clearly it must be the same in all files...
Minor but would be nice to fix.
It is easy to fix - but it is not so minor. For scientists - particualrly math, physics and chemistry - TeX is the most important tool they use daily, and having TeX files not recognized by GNOME is very annoying.
In the latest build, gnome-vfs.keys contains all 3: application/x-tex text/x-tex text/tex I am not sure why we need all 3 - but it is better than whta we had before. Now my only gripe is that of these 3 descriptions, only application/tex contains icon=... field. As a result, TeX files are now correctly recognized as such but do not use (existing) TeX file type icon.
The icon= line should be unnecessary except for the "non default" entries. GnomeVFS automatically uses icons that are named the same as a type. For the other types we should hardcode an icon= field pointing to whatever we deem to be the default type. If you want to make a patch for this I'd be happy to apply it.
Created attachment 11412 [details] [review] this patch adds icon_filename=gnome-tex to text/x-tex mime type
I almost forgot about this one... But here is the (trivial) patch. If you authorize me, I can apply it myself. Another thing, related to this: currently, all TeX types have category=Documents/Text markup. This is strange given that there is a separate category Documents/TeX which only contains dvi files. Should we change that? I can make a patch for this, too.
I committed your patch to CVS HEAD, thanks
