GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 767107
Set a nice host name
Last modified: 2018-09-21 16:18:47 UTC
I just installed Fedora 24. After installation the hostname was some techno gibberish. This isn't very helpful in helping people identify the machine, and it doesn't look good in the terminal or in the control center details panel. It would be great if initial setup could set a hostname based on the user's first name. For example: "Angela's Computer".
I’d just like to add that using names like that doesn’t translate too well to other languages, especially ones with declension. For example, in Polish you would need to inflect the name to make it “Komputer Angeli” (the genitive of Angela is “Angeli”) or use an extra word, like “Komputer użytkownika Angela” (literally: “A computer of the user Angela”) to make it grammatical. The former is impossible, the latter completely loses the personal touch that you want to achieve and makes it sound robotic. This problem has been worked around in, as far as I can tell, two other GNOME projects before: https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-user-share/tree/src/http.c#n116 https://git.gnome.org/browse/vino/tree/server/vino-mdns.c#n57 Whatever you choose to do here, please keep it in mind.
