This bug report mentions various things but maybe display .xsession-errors 
on failure, and check for issues with /tmp files.

Definitely. I have heard of a number of people who wasted hours
because of this.

This has been fixed just before the stable release of 2.4.  That is,
when the session lasts a very short time, gdm allows you to view the
.xsession-errors file
