Thanks! I'll take care of the other games, as well.

Or is there any point - I was just going to resave the SVGs in the larger sizes. Perhaps that is not helpful?
Comment 4 Michael Catanzaro 2013-11-30 15:19:03 UTC
Jakub - sorry, I handled this too hastily last night.

The redesigned icon is nice, but I'm not really comfortable with it replacing the current gnome-chess icon. I'd prefer to keep to the style of the original, which matches the default art much better.
Comment 5 Jakub Steiner 2013-11-30 20:20:09 UTC
For an app icon I think you should worry about matching the OS/environment. I'll be happy to give a hand with the actual chess pieces in the game as well. Dig the transitions.

I guess here is exactly where I'm confused. The original icon seems to be in the same style as all other GNOME icons, like a cartoon, and the new one seems to stick out from the rest in the shell overview - it's much more realistic than the others.

I hate to sound unappreciative... maybe I'm just shocked by change.

Well that would be simply amazing. The default 2D pieces are standard and familiar to all Chess players, but we have a 3D mode, with pieces similar to the ones in your new icon, that's off by default because the board and the pieces do not look very good at all. I'm not sure if it might be outside your area of expertise - 3DS models for the pieces, and direct OpenGL for the board (I could try to switch it to take a 3DS board) - but if you want to lend a hand that would be awesome. This is Bug #664979 (and Bug #566689 is related).

The current icon only comes in low res. The new icon follows the same guidelines. See http://tango.freedesktop.org and https://wiki.gnome.org/Design/HIG/IconsAndArtwork

The highres is more detailed, just like all the other apps:

Perhaps the super detailed textures are putting you off. I'm fine with dropping marble and wood and going with porcelain/plastic.

That's exactly what I was trying to express, thanks. This level of realism would be amazing in the game itself, but next to other GNOME/Tango icons, it feels out of place.

I'll make sure to add all GNOME apps to the list — https://wiki.gnome.org/GnomeGoals/HighResolutionAppIcons

adding Lapo to the CC: as I believe he was working on some that don't seem to show up.

I meant to say gnome games, not gnome apps

I still have some hesitation - even this version looks extremely realistic compared to other GNOME icons - but I guess if you're changing lots of other icons too...

(That said: my compliments on the art.)

Updates are planned for the other games icons [1]. I'm sure that it will look consistent once the others have been done.

FWIW the time required for me to decide it was a nice icon was roughly five days. I'm properly grateful now - thanks. :)
