Description Allan Day 2012-10-22 11:39:22 UTC
The existing chat integration could be refined to make it clearer that chat is provided by the system, and to make sure that it doesn't annoy people who don't use it. Ideas:

 * If there are no chat accounts configured, don't show the chat
status icon in the top bar, and don't show status in the user menu.

 * If someone is offline, replace the status dropdown with a button
that reads "Sign in to chat" (or equivalent).

 * Don't default to online on first run. When someone first uses their
system, they should be set to offline and chat should only be enabled
via a deliberate user action.

What would the layout in the user menu be then? Centering the username vertically or just hide the combo box? Or maybe we should put in a link to the online accounts panel in that case?

Makes sense to me.

I'm not sure what you mean - our default should be offline already. Maybe telepathy sets newly created accounts to online?

Hide the combobox and vertically center the user's name against their avatar.

People should have already been exposed to online accounts during initial setup. If they haven't added any accounts at that time, it is most likely that they either don't have any, or don't want to use them.

I'm not sure about what the current behaviour is, tbh. I'll check later today.

We now have a setting to hide the user name - what should we show in that case if the status icon is hidden as well?

Ha. Good question!

This seems obsolete with the new system menu.
