Description Jeremy Bicha 2012-10-08 16:22:09 UTC
This is a workaround for power users for the "Show Apps" button
placement being too inconvenient to press at the bottom of the
dash favorites list.

Unity also uses Super+A to show the Apps lens.

If added this should probably also go into the gnome-user-docs (e.g. open new bug report).
Comment 3 Matthias Clasen 2012-10-09 11:08:48 UTC
Makes sense to me. Should add this to https://live.gnome.org/GnomeOS/Design/Whiteboards/KeyboardShortcuts too

Review of attachment 226058 [details] [review]:

I don't know what a "power user" is (I'd expect this kind of users to use search rather then the application grid) ... but I don't see a reason why we shouldn't add it.
Patch looks good.
Comment 5 Jeremy Bicha 2012-10-10 19:06:15 UTC
Ok, this is marked "accepted-commit_now" but shouldn't this require a Freeze Exception if we want it for 3.6.1?

"Power user" is a vaguely defined concept of a guy that's been using Linux for a while so he isn't really a newbie but he's likely not a GNOME developer either. Since it's an unclear term, maybe I shouldn't use it.

As useful as immediate search is, there are also reasons why you'd want to see the full list of installed apps.
Comment 6 Matthias Clasen 2012-10-10 20:48:43 UTC
We are not in hard code freeze anymore; this doesn't fall under string or ui freeze. So, if Florian wants it in 3.6.1, it can go in

Mmmh, sure? I've had complaints from translators before about adding new strings on stable branches.

I'm fine with the change, but we should probably add it to the Shortcuts section in System Settings as well (e.g. add a KeyListEntry in data/50-gnome-shell-system.xml).
Comment 8 Allan Day 2012-10-10 21:44:25 UTC
Seems like a good shortcut to have. cc'ing Jimmac - he's been keeping track of our system shortcuts.

Oh right, there _is_ a new string in the settings.
So, we'll ask for a string freeze break, then

Sounds good. Added to https://live.gnome.org/GnomeOS/Design/Whiteboards/KeyboardShortcuts

Updated patch to add the binding to the Shortcuts panel. This doesn't really need another review, so I'll just request a string freeze break ...

I only managed to get 1/2 from i18n, so not in 3.6.1 unfortunately.
Comment 13 chris 2012-10-24 07:35:01 UTC
Nice.
Do we get this in GNOME 3.6.2 :)?
Comment 14 Florian Müllner 2012-10-24 07:48:22 UTC
Only if we get the string freeze break approved.
