If I press the Esc key or cancel button when in the login screen, the screen shield fades in. It should slide down from the top in the usual manner.

git-bz screwed up, but I pushed the patch as 107f5de

This problem has been fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report.
