GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 677037
not possible to start a new game, gnuchess processes taking 100% CPU
Last modified: 2013-05-01 21:42:02 UTC
Version: 3.4.2 We are having gnuchess 6.0.2 in Debian, so we apply [1] to the Debian glchess package. glchess is still broken though. When trying to launch a new game in glchess, a new gnuchess process is being spawned using 100% CPU but nothing happens in glchess. This is the top output after trying to launch a new game a couple of times. 4972 michael 20 0 287m 258m 1176 R 100,1 6,7 0:06.72 gnuchess 4962 michael 20 0 351m 258m 1192 R 99,8 6,7 0:20.52 gnuchess 4976 michael 20 0 287m 258m 1176 R 99,4 6,7 0:05.63 gnuchess 4968 michael 20 0 351m 258m 1192 R 98,8 6,7 0:07.79 gnuchess Even after exiting glchess, those processes stay around and need to be killed manually. This makes glchess basically useless atm. I'm not sure if this is the same issue as bug #676529 [1] http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-games/commit/?h=gnome-3-4&id=5cf5077dc049ea6836251e040b6975c120142476
I see Debian has patched the issue with the processes not dying. Did you get the computer to start playing, though? If this is still an issue, can you set the environment variable G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all, launch glchess from the terminal, make a move, and post the terminal output? You should see something that indicates what the engine is doing (similar to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=665610#c15 )
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. However, you are using a version that is too old and not supported anymore. GNOME developers are no longer working on that version, so unfortunately there will not be any bug fixes for the version that you use. By upgrading to a newer version of GNOME you could receive bug fixes and new functionality. You may need to upgrade your Linux distribution to obtain a newer version of GNOME. Please feel free to reopen this bug if the problem still occurs with a newer version of GNOME.
