file-roller 3.1.92 on Ubuntu 11.10 amd64

When I open a tarball and navigate to a subfolder and then back to the main folder, the gui shows extra "copies" of the folders. See the linked screenshot to better explain.

I cannot duplicate with 3.1.91 and I believe there was only one non-translation commit between these two releases...

This problem has been fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report.
