Gnumeric's implementation of the list and combo boxes store the index of the selected item in the linked cell. ODF has the option to store the content of the selected item instead. It appears to me that this may also be teh case in Excel.

This problem has been fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report.
