Description mdoller 2001-09-10 06:24:33 UTC
I'm using a crystal on-board card (cs4232), so this may not be that common,
but the mixer applet does nothing for me. in order for me to change the
volume for anything in gnome, i have to change the Pcm device in gmix,
_not_ the volume.
It might be nice to let the user pick which device to be controlled by the
slider... music junkies could then add six or seven sliders to their
panels, and change all the levels from there.
Comment 1 Kjartan Maraas 2001-09-10 08:33:04 UTC
I think this was solved by falling back to PCM for devices with no
master volume. Please try the latest release (1.4.0.4) and report back.
Comment 2 mdoller 2001-10-30 13:51:51 UTC
sorry for the long delay in getting back
i just pulled gnome-applets from cvs yesterday, and compiled them, and
i'm still getting the same behavior, i.e. the applet does not control
the sound
i dont know if anyone else has this problem. i will check on some
mailing lists, and around irc
Comment 3 Ingo Ruhnke 2002-01-22 09:46:01 UTC
I can confirm the problem with a Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1
soundcard and an 2.4.17 Kernel, the mixer_applet uses the volume, but
to actually change the volume one has to adjust the the pcm-volume,
not the main-volume. This might be a kernel bug, since the main-volume
is also shown in gmix, but without taking any effect (this was
different in other kernel version). But anyway it would be very nice
if it would be possible to connect the applet to another device (pcm,
ogain, etc).

This is really borderline between 'enhancement' and 'major'... this
does work for most people, but is completely non-functional for that
minority. So the assessment could go either way. Irrelevant unless
someone steps up with code, really.

Changing title to better reflect bug and severity

Any chance this could be fixed by adding a feature to allow users to
select particular mixer elements to operate? While for this particular
user it may be important, I could see many (including myself) having
use for multiple mixer applets on a panel, each operating master,
headphones, line-in, cd-volume, pcm.

The only trick I see personally is applying a visual cue to which
mixer is which. gnome-voume-control has icons that would seem to meet
this purpose for the most part.

Fixed in cvs now. You can select the channel controlled by the applet now.
