A1 to A5 contain 1 through 5 (or any other data)
create a column chart from this data in A1 to A5
deselect the chart
try to select the chart by clicking in the region below the horizontal axis: 

result: part of the chart disappears.

this is even more obvious if you create the column chart using the histogram tool since that chart then does not have a background rectangle so clicking virtually anywhere inside the chart does not select the chart but overwrites it with the cells below.

Fixed
