[Dash] Change "RECENT DOCUMENTS" to "RECENT" because the former is too long (872 bytes, patch)

Description Siegfried Gevatter (RainCT) 2009-08-14 22:24:19 UTC
< RainCT> There's also the problem about strings not fitting into the available space. Eg., the "Find apps or documents" is particularly difficult (and, by the way, using abbreviations -like "apps"- is considered bad practice afaik :)). "RECENT DOCUMENTS" doesn't fit either in German.
< bochecha> Same issue in French with the search :(

Screenshot of the German translation

- The start of the "Search apps or documents" text is cut. The same happens with the Catalan and the French translations.
- The "RECENTLY USED" label overlaps with the "Browse" button.

We could replace the sample text with just "Search" perhaps?

For the labels, we should probably just ellipsize (with tooltip expansion (we need a generic class for this)).

Just use "Search" for the top bar; more easily translatable, and will work
on small screens.

In the dash section headers, for now punt and just ellipsize. This will
be somewhat improved in the future when we have infrastructure to do
mouseover tooltips.
Comment 5 Owen Taylor 2009-08-18 16:41:42 UTC
One approach to the search is to just to put a comment above the string

/* Translators: this should be the translation of "Search" if translating the phrase below would be result in something much longer in your language */

that will then appear in the .po file.

For small screens, if the sidebar isn't wide enough for "Find apps and documents" then it's not wide enough to be usable.

I don't think the ellipsization for the headers is right. The shell can't show up in German with:

 ZULETZT GEÖFFNETE DOK...

That's basically as broken as it running over the Browse button.

Again there could be a comment suggesting "Recent" and "Recently Used" as shorter alternatives.

(Though for that one, we probably should switch for English as well. It's been commented that jpegs, etc, are not "Documents" in popular conception.)
Comment 6 William Jon McCann 2009-08-18 21:53:55 UTC
A few things for now:
 * Use "Find..." for the search field since we also (should) search for more than apps and documents
 * Use "More" (again) instead of Browse since that is likely to be shorter in many languages since it is more everyday.
 * We don't need a "Less" though, see below.
 * We probably need to make the current "more view" consistent with the new search results that will appear in place at the left. We're going to try to mockup some drill-down UI for the more mode. This may allow us to better use search in the more mode as well.
 * We can use "Recently Used" or "Recent Items" instead of more technical term "documents" since it is likely to be longer and isn't really accurate.
 * We can add translator comments suggesting abbreviations as Owen mentioned above.
 * We probably need to ellipsize in any case since it would look pretty bad to just clip off at the right side.

Sound ok?

[Dash] Change "RECENT DOCUMENTS" to "RECENT" because the former is too long

Particularly in translations.

patch no longer applies since the section is called "RECENT ITEMS" not, not "RECENT DOCUMENTS".

Also, I don't know if this is a resolution thing or if the layout has changed since this bug was filed, but I see "ZULETZT GEÖFFNETE DOKUMENTE" with no ellipsization and a little extra space leftover on my machine now.
Comment 9 Florian Müllner 2010-12-04 03:51:51 UTC
I don't think this is still an issue with the new layout.
