GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 591724
Punctuation being spoken twice
Last modified: 2009-08-20 21:18:50 UTC
The original discussion comes from http://mail.gnome.org/archives/orca-list/2009-August/msg00198.html: "Type two spaces after a punctuation mark. Do you hear the punctuation mark spoken twice?" The response from some people is "yes", though I have trouble reproducing it. There are a couple things that might come into play here: 1) Underlying audio system issues where the audio system is experiencing some problems (e.g., audio underflow) and is stuttering. 2) Orca is possibly sending the words/characters multiple times. Testing whether this is Orca or not is somewhat easy to do: enable debugging per http://live.gnome.org/Orca/Debugging then restart Orca, reproduce the problem, and quit Orca. Save the debug file. It has "SPEECH OUTPUT" lines that say what has been sent to the speech synthesis system. If there's duplicates in there, we can then dig deeper. Note that I'd also be interested in the Orca settings people have chosen. In particular, the settings for key echo and spoken punctuation.
I found this situation when reading or composing messages in thunderbird. Also the punctuation level must be set to all. I tried to reproduce using gedit without success.

Created attachment 140684 [details] Debug.out showing the problem occuring.
Created attachment 140688 [details] debug.out and user-settings.py Composing a message in thunderbird. Two blanks between each word and two blanks after the . that ends the phrase. Punctuation level is set to all. Phrase used to demonstrate the problem: A simple text with more than one blank between word. Copied and pasted from the thunderbird window composer.

Is punctuation being spoken twice for you, or is this the separate problem described in http://mail.gnome.org/archives/orca-list/2009-August/msg00196.html?
(In reply to comment #5) > is this the separate problem described in > http://mail.gnome.org/archives/orca-list/2009-August/msg00196.html? See bug #591734 for that problem.

Since it happens to me only in thunderbird, perhaps it is related to thunderbird.

I'm not seeing what I'd expect as a smoking gun in the debug output. As a test, can you please try eSpeak instead of IBMTTS to see if that has any effect?
