GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 590180
use gedit in desktop file Name
Last modified: 2011-09-13 22:02:54 UTC
As discussed in various places we shouldn't use the generic name for the name field in the desktop files: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xdg/2009-July/010807.html We should also have consistency between the Name field, the name used in the titlebar, the name used in the application menu (gnome-shell, or OS X), the about box, and the documentation. This name can be "Text Editor", "gedit", or something else but it should be used consistently. As discussed on IRC with pbor, it seems that the name is "gedit". Can we change the name in the desktop file to reflect this?
if this is agreed on by everybody, feel free to commit the change.

Patch applied on master. Thanks for it.
Ubuntu bug about the change on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/421221 "You'll find 'gedit' where you should see 'Text Editor'."
do you really think that having the menu entry as "gedit" is better than "Text Editor"? the change seems to be seen as a bug by users
(In reply to comment #5) > do you really think that having the menu entry as "gedit" is better than "Text > Editor"? the change seems to be seen as a bug by users I think the problem is now in the menu, not in gedit, because the menu should use the generic name.
reopening, it has been suggested on IRC that "X-GNOME-Fullname=gedit Text Editor" should be used there
> because the menu should use the generic name. it doesn't, where did you read that?
Personally, I think the program should be considered a core component and be called Text Editor - as with Terminal. However, the gedit maintainers do not agree. It is up to them. Whatever name is chosen it must be consistently used.

Should be fixed now.
This is not fixed as you can see in this screenshot: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/32430194/Screenshot.png Only the menu entry has the "correct" name. Anyway I think that "Gedit Text Editor" or "GEdit Text Editor" is better than "gedit Text Editor" as I can't find any other program that starts with a lowercase letter
(In reply to comment #12) > This is not fixed as you can see in this screenshot: Please always mention your exact version, otherwise this comment is useless. Thanks in advance!
