Description William Jon McCann 2009-07-28 22:38:22 UTC
Please remove the GNOME from the about dialog and simply call it Terminal. This is consistent with the Name in the desktop file. We should probably also fix the docs too.
Comment 1 Christian Persch 2009-08-13 12:47:16 UTC
Why? The about dialogue should tell the user which terminal exacly it is, so he can file bugs etc.
Comment 2 William Jon McCann 2009-08-13 13:05:57 UTC
The user is far more likely to base the bug report description on the launcher name and the name in the titlebar than the one in the about dialog. Even still any reasonable bug reporting workflow wouldn't require the user to have to do much work to figure out "which terminal exactly it is." We should probably make bugzilla also accept the names used in the menus when bugs are reported.

In any case, there is really no reason for GNOME here. It is implied.
Comment 3 André Klapper 2009-08-13 13:08:48 UTC
That's what the "A terminal emulator for the GNOME desktop" string is for.
The Terminal should only be called Terminal. For the "Why?" see the dep bug.
Comment 4 William Jon McCann 2009-08-13 13:11:02 UTC
Oh, I should also point out that Dictionary is an example of an application that gets it right. And also, there is not a 1-1 mapping from application to bug component anyway at the moment. And we shouldn't drive our user interface design by what our bug system does - maybe the reverse.
Comment 5 Christian Persch 2009-08-13 13:36:23 UTC
Come on. I was using "file a bug" only as one example why a user would want to know which terminal *exactly* he's using. Another would be to know which of the N terminals to recommend to his friends. And the linked dep bug talks about desktop files, i.e. the menus. That's not applicable here. And the bug only links to a *proposed* GnomeGoal. Another goal, http://live.gnome.org/GnomeGoals/AboutDialog , would be more appropriate for this. So maybe you should make your point there, and drive this goal to 'accepted' state.
Comment 6 William Jon McCann 2009-08-13 13:48:57 UTC
_("GNOME Terminal") in the about dialog does not allow anyone to tell exactly what terminal this is any more than the launcher does. If something is not branded it is assumed that the thing in question is the default thing. Saying GNOME Terminal here (remember this is translated) is no better than saying Terminal or the standard terminal or default terminal.

Hopefully, we don't need GNOME Goal just for this...
Comment 7 Javier Jardón (IRC: jjardon) 2010-04-05 14:05:49 UTC
As Christian said, there is not any problem in .desktop file, so removing dependency.
Comment 8 Christian Persch 2010-08-14 08:53:33 UTC
Not going to happen.
