Description Luke Yelavich 2009-07-27 04:01:25 UTC
Please describe the problem:
When using the Orca Screen reader with empathy and attempting to review a conversation in a chat window using the flat review functions of Orca, only the conversation and date changes are spoken. There is no indication of who spoke what, i.e the text in the coloured stripes in the conversation window is not spoken.

Steps to reproduce:
Load the Orca screen reader in speech mode, and run empathy. Open a conversation with someone on the contact list, and type some text. Using the number pad on a desktop keyboard, move through the window using the num7 and num9 keys to read lines of the conversation.

Actual results:
You will notice that whilst the text of the conversation is spoken, the text in the coloured headings does not get spoken.

Expected results:
One would expect the username/IM name, i.e the text in the coloured heading bars to be spoken.

Does this happen every time?
This occurrs every time.

I think no empathy dev have any experience with orca. Could you please tell us
what is going wrong? It is just a GtkTextView with some tags for the colors, orca should be able to read that, no?

Patch would be really appreciated.

Luke, I have been inspecting Empathy with Accerciser but I don't know what you mean by "coloured heading bars", could you post a screenshot highlighting that area?

If you mean the usernames that are in the text view, they appear correctly in the text property for me.
Comment 3 Luke Yelavich 2009-07-27 22:33:39 UTC
Yes, I do mean the usernames that are in the text view. Maybe a newer version of Empathy than what is in Ubuntu karmic currently has fixed the bug. I'll see about building the latest git master to see if its fixed.
Comment 4 Luke Yelavich 2009-07-28 02:12:49 UTC
Ok, git master of empathy shows no change, the usernames shown in a conversatino window are not spoken when using orca to move over them in flat review mode. This is with the recently released orca version 2.27.5. I will take a poke with accerciser to see what I can find.
Comment 5 Frederic Peters 2009-07-28 06:23:26 UTC
Luke, which theme are you using? I am using "Classic" but I just tried "Blue" and 1) I understand what you meant by "coloured headers" and 2) I confirm there is something fishy a11y wise (username and date are in a child widget).
Comment 6 Luke Yelavich 2009-07-28 06:31:19 UTC
Ah, didn't notice that there were themes. I am using simple, and after testing all themes, the only theme which allows me to find out who wrote what is the classic theme, which is similar to pidgin I suspect. Ubuntu has the simple theme set by default.
