Description Josselin Mouette 2009-06-27 09:47:57 UTC
Currently the documentation is not very clear about how to share files and what files are shared. Furthermore, having to open ~/Public by hand is not obvious for users.

Here are some random ideas that would improve the situation:
 - a Nautilus extension to show a “share this” in a folder’s context menu
 - a “Public files” icon in the panel’s Places menu, only enabled when file sharing is activated
 - a “Open the public folder” button in gnome-user-share-properties

gnome-user-share only shares single particular folder (~/Public); having ability to share any folder would mean either adding one more directory level listing all shared folders (so that we have single point of entry for each machine from network) or having multiple instances of gnome-user-share daemon for each shared folder (which is a stupid idea).

Well it’s just an example of how it could look like. It doesn’t necessary have to be added to shared folders, btw; you could just symlink it from ~/Public for example.

The request is just about making things more obvious.
