GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 585998
can't change sound when using menus
Last modified: 2010-02-04 14:54:16 UTC
Bug reported in Ubuntu's Launchpad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-applets/+bug/387948 " Version: Description: Ubuntu 9.04 Release: 9.04 Toshiba A-300 Laptop Expected: I would expect to be able to change the sound level even if my mouse is currently over a menu. I can normally adjust the sound through the volume knob at the front of my laptop. What happened: No sound level changes when mouse has activated a menu and I try turning the sound adjust knob on my laptop. ... Confirmed, on Ubuntu 9.04, activating a menu like "Applications" makes it so that you can't alter the volume."
i can confirmed, i try and i try but i can't change the volume with the multimedia keys, when i clicked in applications menu or i click with the rigth button over the icon volume control.
could be dup of #440515? http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=440515 I am sure that the fail or defect is similar. who can confirmed?
It is almost certainly the same bug. The problem lies with Gtk, the way menus are implemented, and X's input grabbing features. It isn't related to just the volume keys, the screenshot key doesn't work either (the brightness keys do work, but hardware controls those and sends a notification to software which goes via a different route). I think gnome-settings-daemon might be the best location for this bug since they control the media keys, but the problem might be deeper than that.
Problem is in gtk+, though probably not fixable without considerable X changes.
There are no plans to change GTKs reliance on grabs. At least none that I know of.
