Description Mantas Kriaučiūnas 2001-08-03 17:14:11 UTC
I think translators should mentioned somewhere (maybe in help->about like
in nautilus) Now users don't know where send reports about inaccuracies in
translations, etc.
I think nautilus developers solve this problem at the best:
when I translate nautilus there are 1 string in pot file,
named "translators credits" ant translators should put there e-mails and
names. And If I run nautilus in different language then in about box are
only 1 language translators.
Comment 1 Branko Collin 2002-09-23 22:34:32 UTC
I was thinking about a localized README to be generated by the
installer, to be used alongside the normal README.

Not only would it be a good idea to have a translated version of the
file all users /should/ be using, but this could also be the spot to
mention the translator.

Further, there are some things I'd like to mention to Dutch users, for
instance that there is no Dutch help file. I've been getting questions
about this from what are, I gather, determined users.

I'd also like to point to Dutch introductions and tutorials on the
web. There aren't many, but it would help to lower the barrier for
some people to get into the GIMP.
Comment 2 Sven Neumann 2002-09-23 23:18:17 UTC
I don't think too many people read the README since it's only in the
source tarball. Could you elaborate what you think of when you say
"generated by the installer". What installer are you talking about?
Comment 3 Dave Neary 2003-07-26 20:36:16 UTC
Doesn't look like this is going to get satisfactoraly addressed before
feature freeze. Pushing to Future (could be considered for 2.0).

Dave.
Comment 4 Mantas Kriaučiūnas 2003-07-28 13:54:51 UTC
Why this bug can't be solved in 1.3.x ? Now all Gnome, KDE and lots of
other programs mention translators in Help->About. This is very
comfortable and clear for simple users. Why GIMP should behave different ?
Comment 5 Dave Neary 2003-07-28 14:29:28 UTC
In the GIMP, all contributors are (should be?) mentioned in the About:
dialog. This is not the issue as I see it.

Mentioning the translators alongside the authors is one this, but
addressing the problem in the manner that the original poster
suggested - having the About: box localised so that the translator for
a given locale is the only translator mentioned for that locale.

That's something which would require a little effort, and that is what
I was sayign wouldn't be satisfactorally addressed by 2.0. However, it
is of course possible to add the translators to the AUTHORS file, and
have their names appear alongside the coders in the About: dialog.
This shoudl be done, IMHO. That is, if it hasn't already been done :)

Dave.
Comment 6 Sven Neumann 2003-07-28 15:34:32 UTC
I don't think we can release 2.0 w/o a rewritten About dialog that
addresses this problem.
Comment 7 Raphaël Quinet 2003-08-08 17:57:29 UTC
Moving from enhancement to real bug as suggested during GimpCon.
Comment 8 Dave Neary 2003-10-21 11:50:36 UTC
Is re-writing the About dialog still considered a blocker for 2.0?

Dave.
Comment 9 Raphaël Quinet 2003-10-21 12:16:27 UTC
I don't think this is a blocker for the pre-releases, but I would not
like to have 2.0 released without this. So you could move the target
milestone from 1.3.x to 2.0, but not to Future. IMHO.
Comment 10 Sven Neumann 2003-10-21 13:09:03 UTC
I agree with Raphael but actually I'd like to see this happen before
the prerelease since that release will also mark a string freeze so
all major user interface changes should be in by then. IMO the
prerelease should even have all features of the final 2.0 release.
Comment 11 Dave Neary 2003-10-21 19:32:44 UTC
I agree with Sven. If it anticipates string changes, and if it could
be considered a feature (and re-writing the About dialog does), then
it has to go in before the pre-release, or in the next devel cycle.

Dave.
Comment 12 Simon Budig 2003-10-25 00:22:01 UTC
I am looking at the about dialog at the moment. I have no clear idea
how to integrate the translators, but it might be in
"movie-credit-style": "Translated by:" and then a (list of) names.

I am right now at the "exploring Pango" stage, so it might take a
little bit until this approaches somethign usable. Meanwhile
ideas/input are welcome.
Comment 13 Dave Neary 2003-11-25 13:24:47 UTC
Changing topic to reflect the current status of the bug. Also
increasing priority, since 2.0 is getting close now.

Dave.
Comment 14 Sven Neumann 2003-12-25 12:14:08 UTC
This is needed for 2.0 but it isn't a prerequisite for a pre-release.
Moving to the 2.0 milestone.
Comment 15 Simon Budig 2003-12-30 17:36:23 UTC
I have rewritten the about dialog and it shows a "Translated by" message
when the translator translates it.

Does this close this bug?
Comment 16 Sven Neumann 2003-12-30 18:19:51 UTC
A single translated line doesn't seem sufficient to give credits to
translators since usually there's a handful of them.
Comment 17 Simon Budig 2003-12-30 20:10:43 UTC
Fixed this in CVS.

        * app/gui/about-dialog.c: Made it possible to have multiple
lines of translators in the about dialog. Simply translate
"<Translators: insert your names here, separated by newline>".
