Description Benedict Stein 2009-05-19 20:12:09 UTC
using ubntu 9.04 and evo 2.26.1 importing a google account via imap
I can't sort by unread messages.

It's difficult to find THE unread message within thousands! the list sorted by unread seems to be sorted by date instead !

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
This bug report isn't very useful because it doesn't describe the bug well. If you have time and can still reproduce the bug, please read http://bugzilla.gnome.org/bug-HOWTO.html and add a more useful description to this bug.
Also please use the template.
Comment 2 Benedict Stein 2009-05-20 11:26:17 UTC
ok so let's try it again,
filed against : evolution - mailer V 2.26
using gnome 2.26.1

to reproduce the bug:

1. open evolution mailer component
2. create or have a folder with some unread messages which are not in a row
3. click on the unread icon in the header of the collum
-> you'll notice that mails are sorted by date and not by unread or not

=> I would expect it to sort all mails in the folder with unread messages first, if there are multiple ones unread I would expect it to sort the unread in itself by date or something similar, better the last choosen sort option.

Yes this does happen every time

OS: Ubuntu 9.04
importance: for me it's normal, not minor cause if you've got folders with lots of mails to skim before you find the unread ones.

If there's something else pls let me know

Yeah, what should that be and where is it linked from?
Comment 4 Benedict Stein 2009-05-20 12:31:01 UTC
in the above linked bug how to, category:
Severity: How bad is the bug?

View->Group by Threads, is it turned on or off? If On, then it brings all the thread, thus it makes "gaps" between unread. If Off, then works as expected here.
Comment 6 Benedict Stein 2009-06-04 19:59:44 UTC
Yes that's it thanks, I didn#t notiec it.

I think there sould at least a warning that sorting by unread isn't possible if grouped by threads,

or better evo should sort by unread threads and not fully ignore it.
Comment 7 Milan Crha 2009-06-05 08:05:58 UTC
I believe it doesn't ignore it, it sorts by unread on the level base, as threading is a tree. I'm closing this, as I've no idea how we might be able to fix this.
Comment 8 Benedict Stein 2009-06-05 14:38:56 UTC
Hi Milan, actually it does not sort on the thread base level, like I'll post in a screenshot. Of course it would be nice to solve this issue in this way, but if it's to difficult I would suggest a warning if you click on the view-sort by thread option, that sorting by latest isn't supported - this should be easier or?

PS Evo is written in C like all gnome apps or?

sorted by unread with threaded group - buggy sorted by date

I'm sorrry seems like I fogot to attach it
Comment 10 Milan Crha 2009-06-08 09:22:52 UTC
That could be something else. My german is not good, I'm not sure what is the supposed order, but one thing I know, if you sort only by one column, then the other sorting is based on the arrival on the server (the UID), not the date stored in a mail. And with threading, you probably noticed before, all the thread mails are moved within the view based on the latest received message in them (when sorting by date). Is this that what you see there?

Maybe it's just something a bit different, as there was an issue with sorting by UID, which was fixed recently, if I recall correctly (I do not have the bug number handy, unfortunately).
Comment 11 Milan Crha 2009-10-22 17:32:24 UTC
Changes from bug #484839 might help here a bit, but I realized that it technically cannot work, because if you've turned threading on, and messages have properly set references, then the new messages are supposed to be in the middle of a thread. Thus I'm closing this.
