GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 582677
workspace switcher preference window goes wild
Last modified: 2020-11-06 20:23:25 UTC
Please describe the problem: Workspace switcher preference window goes wild when it fails to communicate its state with the window manager. I use xmonad and I realize making gnome-panel applets to work with xmonad is not a high priority for the gnome team and actually I'm mostly ok with not being able to use the preferences dialog. What bugs me is that when I accidentially try to use the dialog it starts opening and closing itself in a tight loop. When I manage to click on close button of the dialog it goes away, but usually this take me several minutes during which I have to look at the insane flickering caused by the window going away and reappearing. Steps to reproduce: 1. use xmonad as the window manager for GNOME 2. right-click on workspace switcher 3. select preferences Actual results: the preference window goes wild Expected results: a note should pop up explaining that my current window manager doesn't support editing the configuration Does this happen every time? yes Other information:
I originally filed this bug at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libwnck/+bug/310981
This would be a gnome-panel issue (since the applet lives there). But can you try with gnome-panel upstream? It appears that ubuntu is patching the preferences dialog, and it could possibly create this bug.
I can confirm this bug with unpatched libwnck and gnome-panel on Arch Linux.
bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old bug reports in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years. If you can still reproduce this issue in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-panel/-/issues/ Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
