Description Jaroslav Nezbeda 2009-05-07 12:18:07 UTC
Please describe the problem:
I have Ubuntu 8.10, installed this week (last two months it works very good). I was using wifi but, cabel connection was impossible- still not connection. Hmm I try to delete setting of my "cable connection" and type my login information again. But still can´t connect to cabel connection. In czech Ubuntu forum, help me: resolv.conf was empty. I was manualy added line:
nameserver 198.168.1.1
It is working, but not much :( I can´t connect to the Google-Pictures and for example Yahoo video, still in Firefox have messge: Can´t find adress, can´t find server. 3) It maybe DNS error...

I don´t know how to fix it :(
But in this half-function connection is tray icon of NetworkMananger applet still don´t refresh- (with small red icon, which meens I have no active connection; yes in menu function: "information about (active) connection" is not working too)

Steps to reproduce:
I don´t know

It appears you've told NetworkManager to ignore your primary network connection. Try setting your main network interface into "roaming" mode in the Ubuntu network control panel. Can you attach your /etc/network/interfaces file for me too?

roaming mode - I am not sure where is it ( I can´t go to the Google-Pictures...). I mean it is (in Ubuntu 8.10) this second checkbox:

(translate is: "system configuration", but I mean in Ubuntu 8.04 there was czech eqivalent "roaming mode")
I try google and one page tell: roaming mode able you look to all networks around you and look on their strength... Is it this? :

Yes, /etc/network/interfaces I can attach. Cya
Comment 4 Alexander Sack 2009-05-08 15:04:07 UTC
to fix this remove the following lines:

iface eth0 inet static
address 10.0.4.204
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 10.0.4.1

auto eth0

btw, do you remember where and how you configured those static addresses initially etc?

terrific! You have right! My thanks.

after remove theese lines and reboot I have fully functional Internet (can go to the Google-Pictures etc.).

cat etc/resolv.conf:

# Generated by NetworkManager
search 217.117.223.254
nameserver 217.117.223.1

(search is new)

I´m sorry, but I can´t help you with reproduce this bug, I don´t know how... I know, that I do almost nothing, I was only installed some packages (FileZilla, wxDownload Fast, Krusader, ...) Sorry really don´t know...
Comment 6 Jaroslav Nezbeda 2009-05-09 07:41:59 UTC
small information: after rermove theese lines and reboot, older settings (networks) are shown!

Other error is here :(

Everything is fine, but when I work on wireless in school it´s ok (DHCP give me ip), in home my cabel with login it´s ok (DHCP works), but in work when I used cabel without login-must obtained ip from DHCP, I can´t obtained :(

cat etc/resolv.conf (in work):

# Generated by NetworkManager

when i add same info from wireless:
nameserver 195.113.136.94
nameserver 195.113.136.35

It is working. I try to reinstall this package (using purge) and install packages (network-manager and network-manager-gnome) again, but still don´t work :(
