Had to use Google to find out that Karmic Koala is Ubuntu.
What is "opening any of the tools provided by gnome-system tools"?
Please provide exact steps.
Also note that gnome-system-tools is currently unmaintained.

What hardware is this? 32bit, 64 bit?
Comment 2 David 2009-05-03 20:00:45 UTC
Any of the appliances provided by gnome-system-tools exhibit this behaviour, such as users and groups anddate and time settings. I'm on x86_64 hardware. This is a pretty serious bug, as with this problem it isn't possible to change passwords / add users etc.
Comment 3 Thomas Andersen 2009-05-06 11:26:18 UTC
looks like it is fixed in this downstream bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/system-tools-backends/+bug/371234

But g-s-t sure needs some love. I hope I can find some time soon to at least get the obvious patches in
Comment 4 Martin Pitt 2009-05-06 12:41:39 UTC
Please note that this was fixed by stripping down a Debian specific patch, I don't think there's something to be forwarded upstream.
Comment 5 David 2009-06-27 14:19:25 UTC
Seems this wasn't an upstream issue after all.
