Description Jeffrey Ross 2009-03-15 21:31:18 UTC
I've used Gnumeric from the Puppy Linux distribution for years. Solid as a rock, and very functional, thank you! However, a problem as been introduced with the task bar.
When I opened password-protected Excel spreadsheets with Gnumeric 1.6.3 the task would appear on the JWM (Joe's Window Manager) task bar as expected. However, with Gnumeric 1.7.13 the Gnumeric task does not appear on the task bar. (The title-less password window does appear on the task bar, and once the password check is passed, the spreadsheet window appears as normal, the password window task disappears correctly from the task bar, the Gnumeric window appears on the task bar while "Reading the file" is happening, but once the file is opened the Gnumeric task disappears from the task bar.) If the window manager is restarted the task bar is populated correctly. If the password window is cancelled a blank spreadsheet is opened and the Gnumeric task appears on the task bar correctly.
I don't know if this is essentially a window manager problem or a Gnumeric problem or a bit of both. What did work with Gnumeric 1.6 does not work with 1.7 or 1.8.
Puppy Linux 4.1.2 (which contains Gnumeric 1.8.2) is a mere 100MB self-contained, bootable ISO and can be downloaded from www.puppylinux.com. See http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=283837 (which is the relevant thread for this issue on the Puppy Linux forum). This shows that Gnumeric version 1.6.3 can open password-protected spreadsheets correctly irrespective of which version of JWM is being used, while Gnumeric version 1.8.2 fails to open password-protected spreadsheets. Therefore it appears to be a problem with Gnumeric.

WHich problem are you reporting?

Is it that
1) Gnumeric apparently cannot open password protected files for you or
2) Gnumeric doesn't appear on some window managers task bar?

The latter is likely an issue with the window manager.

Thanks for the fast response.
It is the latter case. Gnumeric DOES open the password-protected Excel spreadsheet (so that's good), but the Gnumeric task DOES NOT appeear on the JWM task bar.
While this sounds like a Window Manager fault, it worked fine with Gnumeric 1.6.3 but not with 1.7.13 or 1.8.2. Given that it is Gnumeric that has changed and not the Window Manager, something that Gnumeric does differently between versions 1.6.3 and 1.7.13 has caused this fault to occur.

If we knew what kind of information JWM uses to decide whether to include a window or not in its taskbar, we could probably figure out why things have changed.

Reading the JWM webpage, unfortunately there are no specifications given. Also JWM is not listed as compliant with the "Extended Window Manager Hints" http://standards.freedesktop.org/wm-spec/wm-spec-1.3.html
So there is no reasonable way from our side to figure out why the interaction has degraded.

Is this still a problem with 1.9.16 or 17?
Comment 5 Jeffrey Ross 2009-12-17 22:44:46 UTC
That is hard for me to test.
Puppy Linux is still using 1.8.2. At a guess the latest Gnumeric may not be included into the distribution for several months yet (but I don't know what the developers' plans are).
I downloaded 1.9.17 which requires libgoffice-0.8 (so I downloaded that) and libgsf-1 >=1.14.15, so I searched for that, but its dependencies are significant and I suspect will clash with the current level of existing packages in Puppy Linux.
So for the present I can't answer your question. I'm keen to help, but can't afford to spend days trying to build Gnumeric. Are there any pre-built executables available? They may run on Puppy Linux, dependencies depending... Note that the link to Novell on the gnumeric\downloads.shtml currently doesn't seem to provide any packages that I can see in any sub-menu.
If you're interested in reproducing the problem, Puppy Linux is a 100MB ISO which inludes Gnumeric, eg http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/puppy-4.3.1/pup-431.iso - simply download the ISO, burn to CD, boot from CD, and open a previously created password-protected Excel spreadsheet (say on a USB drive). The task bar fails to show the Gnumeric task once the file is opened, so if the Gnumeric task is minimised there is no way to open the Gnumeric window again (except by restarting the window manager).

Please reopen this bug if you can replicate it with a recent version (say 1.9.15 or later).
