Description Cacophrene 2009-02-23 07:22:27 UTC
Hello !

I encountered a strange behavior (fully reproducible) when trying to print some empty table (which are intended to be filled by hand). For instance, consider the empty table B1:E3. The related printing area does not extend to E3 if there is no more text after it. Adding "end" (or any other text) in E4 solves the problem.

If you want to extent the printing area to include all styles (even those without content) you should select "Print styles with no content" in the pageset-up dialog.

Since users may format whole columns, by default the printing area is the minimum rectangle encompassing all cells with content.

Thank you for your quick reply. I should have read the documentation more carefully. However, I still think this behaviour is somewhat weird : if you manually select an area and then explicitly define it as "printing area", it is really puzzling to see that Gnumeric applies the default rule instead of taking the selection into account.

There is no such thing as "explicitly defining the printing area" since there is _always_ a printing area set. It may just be the whole sheet.

But I realize that many people run into this,

Here is the step-by-step procedure which confused me :
  - open Gnumeric
  - create an empty table (with text in column headers)
  - File > Printing area > Define as printing area (I use the french version of Gnumeric and my English is really bad. I'm not sure it is the good translation)
  - Then I want to print my selection

And the weird behaviour occurs.
Well, now I see how to do. Thank you for your precious help.

Future versions of Gnumeric 1.9.5 will behave as you expected.
