GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 561831
Horizontal volume slider
Last modified: 2010-05-10 00:39:16 UTC
Could you show a full horizontal volume slider instead of the current iconized vertical slider. A fully-shown horizontal slider is easier to manipulate and, with it, it is easier to see what the current volume is. Other information:
This is probably an enhancement instead of a bug, but I would agree that it would be useful. Especially with all of that empty space at the top.
I don't see the problem, volume is all about what you HEAR, right? You can even tell if the volume is roughly in the 0-33%, 33-66% or 50-100% area just by the look of the volume icon and it's waves. "Especially with all of that empty space at the top" => we've got some space, so let's fill it? Oh please, don't use logic like that for UI design :)

I would agree that the icon gives enough information about the current volume. The real issue, I think, is that if it sounds too quiet, I want to make it louder in as few clicks as possible. > "Especially with all of that empty space at the top" => we've got some space, > so let's fill it? Oh please, don't use logic like that for UI design :) I certainly never suggested that we fill all of banshee's negative space with needless gadgets. If anything, parts of the ui are already too cluttered. The controls, seek bar, album art, and a bunch of text are all packed into the top left corner. The top right corner, however, is almost completely empty. Adding a slider instead of a button wouldn't add too much clutter, and, if anything, I think it would balance the ui a bit. A better solution, imo, would be some reorganizing of everything above the music library. Spacing things out or containing things in boxes could really help. This is one area that I think Songbird 1.0 does fairly well. I'm getting a little off topic, though, so maybe I'll save this discussion for somewhere else. :)
It takes the same amount of clicks. A horizontal slider presents no real functional difference over the button+vertical slider we have today. Our current volume button was specially instrumented to support dragging on the button to adjust the volume. The slider popup gets positioned directly under the mouse so that dragging on the button up will increase the volume, down will decrease. I do not want to change the UI here in the main client, but we are looking into alternative UI designs for new clients.
Yes! Change it! It is the worst thing about Banshee. The slider should be modelled on the VLC volume control. It provides an accurate and visually attractive way in which to alter volume. It also allows mouse hover scrolling to adjust volume quickly, Banshee's button allows this but does not provide significant feedback, also the small area makes it fiddly. This issue and the lack of an autofocus on track change feature are big letdowns for Banshee, otherwise a great music player.
(In reply to comment #5) > Yes! Change it! It is the worst thing about Banshee. In case you didn't notice, the bug has been RESOLVED WONTFIX, meaning the developers do not intend to change this. One cool thing about Banshee is that you could pretty easily write an Extension that replaces the volume control with something you prefer, and distribute it to others who share your opinion. > the lack of an autofocus on track change feature are big letdowns for Banshee, Then you'll be glad to hear that this feature has been fixed (bug #537168) and will be in the upcoming beta release.
