Description Percy Leonhardt 2008-11-19 20:46:35 UTC
Please describe the problem:
I am using the wide view with the message list in the middle. When
moving the right border of the message list (far) to the right Evolution
does not restore this position on next start up. Instead the right border
is back to its old position.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Evolution
2. Make sure wide view is selected
3. Move the right border of the message list to the right (the middle of a 1280 wide screen is enough)
4. Close Evolution
5. Open Evolution again

Actual results:
The right border of the message list is back at its old position.

Expected results:
The right border should be were I moved it before closing Evolution.

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

Other information:
One interesting thing I found out is that when Evolution is open and I
move the slider to the right the gconf-key /apps/evolution/mail/display/hpaned_size is changed. When editing this value in gconf-editor it has no effect on Evolution. When changing the key /apps/evolution/mail/display/paned_size in gconf-editor the slider in Evolution is instantly moved.

I cannot reproduce this on my machine, I've 1280x1024 screen resolution, evolution window is maximized, wide view is set, the preview part is minimized as much as possible (slider is approximately under the "in" word, before "Current Folder" combo of the search setup). I close Evolution, run Evolution and it's still there. It works fine for me even with 2.24.1.

Any idea what am I doing wrong?
Comment 2 Percy Leonhardt 2008-12-03 21:50:01 UTC
No, the steps are exact the same that I am doing. I first thought the problem is caused by some old or incompatible settings in my home directory, that's why I checked with a complete fresh install of Mandriva 2009 with a fresh i.e. empty home directory.

Just yesterday I installed Fedora 10 and I could reproduce the behavior immediately.

If it is that easy for me to reproduce this on 2 freshly installed distributions maybe you have the time to try this yourself?

I'm seeing it too. Looks like an initialization problem.

If you start Evolution in vertical view, the pane position is set to its default. But if you switch to classic view and then back to verical view, the position from the last session is restored.

Maybe you didn't get my question, I asked "what am I *doing* wrong", aka I was trying to reproduce, but no luck, on two different versions of evolution.

Great, I'll let this for you, if you can reproduce.

Not for me, as I said.

Indeed, I got your question. As I said, from your description it seems that you are doing nothing wrong. I just wanted to suggest a way to reproduce the problem.
Comment 6 Percy Leonhardt 2008-12-31 10:22:13 UTC
Update: I am using Evolution with the window maximized.

Today I played around with Evolution and used an un-maximized window. I moved around the slider and created a large message list and a very small message preview. This time closing Evolution and reopening it again Evolution restored the slider position to the previous position!

More interestingly after I maximized the window again I now can move the slider to any position I like and it is restored as expected.

I don't think there was an update to Evolution in Ubuntu 8.10 in the last weeks so I don't know what really fixed it but at the moment it works for me. I will keep an eye on it.

This was supposed to be addressed within bug #608203, thus I'm marking this as a duplicate of it.
