Description David Fox 2008-10-17 18:41:05 UTC
Please describe the problem:
I bound F4 to raise_or_lower, but the key has no effect. The raise and lower shortcuts work fine.

Steps to reproduce:
Bind "raise obscured window, otherwise lower" to F4 on an up-to-date Ubuntu Hardy system. The same problem exists when I upgraded metacity from version 2.22.0 to 2.25.1.

Actual results:
Pressing F4 has no effect.

Expected results:
I would expect the window to be lowered if it is on top of all other windows, raised if any windows are covering any part of it.

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

I can confirm this bug exists on Ubuntu 9.04 (metacity 2.25.144), and it's annoying --- it's such a useful function for window management.

The "Move window to workspace N" shortcuts don't seem to work either.

Begging your pardon! I found the problem --- the window manager being used was compiz instead of good ol' metacity. When I changed to metacity, everything is working again. (: Sorry to bother you.

David, I suggest you check that you're actually using metacity, because raise_or_lower works for me with Ubuntu 9.04.

Yes, switching window managers fixes it. And to do this I went into System -> Preferences -> Appearance and clicked the Visual Effects tab, and selected "None". Thanks!

Unfortunately, I don't know how to do make this switch in Ubuntu 12.04.

You can select a 2-D session before logging in to ubuntu 12.04, and this gives you the raise/lower key binding. Unfortunately, I need a 3-D session.

According to comments this was bug with compiz not metacity, closing...
