I'll commit a patch to support tints shortly, but that still leaves much unexplained.

aha the docs are not accurate.
http://openxmldeveloper.org/forums/thread/1306.aspx was the necessary hint.
My impression is that the indicies are actually a bug in XL they meant to export the colour names from a fixed map.
