GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 553311
Not detecting Ipod
Last modified: 2010-07-19 07:53:49 UTC
Since the last update, Banshee is not able to show the Ipod. At the begining, it was working. I have tried everything, delete the config files and reinstall it, but nothing happens while gtkpod or Rhythmbox works perfectly well.
Please test with Banshee 1.3.0 or higher (ideally 1.3.1 or from svn), there have been many fixes since 1.2.1.
I have tried banshee 1.3.1 and it is not working. I think that the problem is with podsleuth which says the following: Found an iPod device, but it is not known by PodSleuth: Error: org.podsleuth.* properties are missing UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_9502_7D58 Block Device: /dev/sdb2 Mount Point: /media/IPOD DE DAN Cause: PodSleuth may not be installed properly, the HAL daemon may need to be restarted and/or the device needs to be refreshed. Note: A PodSleuth debug log was found: /tmp/podsleuth-debug This file may provide more details or can be useful to developers. Please save it somewhere else and use it in a bug report. See http://banshee-project.org/PodSleuth
I have also tried the svn HEAD version and the same problem: my iPod is not shown in banshee. I was using banshee-1 with my iPod for two or three weeks and suddenly everything stop working. I think the problem is related to podsleuth.
I'm having this kind of behavior. My iPod (nano 4G) is not detected by Banshee (trunk). I suspect podsleuth (trunk too). [ soow :: ~ ] # podsleuth --rescan Rescanning device [/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_3141_5926] Unhandled Exception: System.Exception: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: Method "Scan" with signature "" on interface "org.podsleuth" doesn't exist at IPodSleuthProxy.Scan () [0x00000] at PodSleuth.HalFrontend.HalClient.Run (System.String[] args) [0x00000] at PodSleuth.HalFrontend.HalEntry.Main (System.String[] args) [0x00000] I'm using banshee rev. 4696, podsleuth rev. 68, ipod-sharp rev. 116140 under Hardy / Gnome. Thanks, Warren
Go it working with: [ soow :: ~ ] # sudo cp /usr/local/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/20-podsleuth.fdi /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/ Looks like HAL doesn't load third party policies.

Comment on attachment 121569 [details] Podsleuth debug I'm still having problems detecting my iPod with the latest podsleuth.
Created attachment 121717 [details] Podsleuth debug file I have tried again with the banshee stable release, and the error still there. Attached is the bug report that podsleuth generates.
(Assuming the answer is yes, but...) Are you still having this problem with recent version of Banshee (like 1.5.1, for example)? Which Linux distributions were/are you using? This issue sounds a lot like Bug 586508, which has been fairly popular among Fedora - and now Ubuntu 9.10 - users. If your system is using DeviceKit-disks to mount the iPod, Banshee's podsleuth tool will have some problems accessing the iPod. Your symptoms and debug logs look similar 586508, so maybe the two are related...?
Daniel, could you please answer the questions asked in comment #9?
It's worth mentioning that the other bug I mentioned has been fixed in git master. If you have a chance to test with git, there's a decent chance this issue will also be fixed.
(In reply to comment #9) > (Assuming the answer is yes, but...) Are you still having this problem with > recent version of Banshee (like 1.5.1, for example)? I just gave up with Banshee, as all the packages for Ubuntu Hardy debs were not working at all. Nevertheless, I could re-install Banshee from the official repository and try to plug in my iPod. The most interesting part, is that at the beginning everything worked well, but in one update, Banshee stopped to detect my iPod. > > Which Linux distributions were/are you using? Hey Daniel, thank for replying :) (In reply to comment #12) > (In reply to comment #9) > > (Assuming the answer is yes, but...) If I remember well, the version 1.2 or 1.3 worked, and then the 1.4 version didn't detect my iPod.
Thanks again. I am setting this bug to NEW then. I assume that once 1.4.1 is not supported anymore (might be nowadays already) and the bug doesn't appear in a more recent version, the report will get closed as OBSOLETE. Please report back if once you have the chance to try it with a more recent version.
OK. If I have the problem once I upgrade my Ubuntu I'll report the new status.
(In reply to comment #14) > Yes, I will try it again when the new LTS version will be released. Just a friendly nudge. :) Have you had a chance to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 yet? If so, does the problem still exist with Banshee 1.6 from the 10.04 repositories?
For 10.04 you'll need podsleuth 0.6.7 which I just released (after 10.04 was released, unfortunately) - not sure if it's packaged yet, should be hitting the PPA and hopefully will be pushed as an online update for 10.04.
Hi everyone, I have just upgraded (re-installation of the OS) to 10.04, and I still having the same problem. I plug the iPod in, and nothing happens. Banshee is not able to open my second generation iPod nano, while Rhythmbox and gtkpod yes. I don't know what's going on, as my iPod was supported by Banshee some time ago, and now it is impossible.
Hi Daniel, See Gabriel's comment before yours (Comment 18). I nudged you a bit early, I guess, as some of the iPod issues haven't fully been corrected in Lucid. As far as I can tell, Podsleuth 0.6.7 hasn't yet been packaged for Ubuntu 10.04, and your iPod probably isn't going to work without it. Sorry for the early nudge; I'll try to check back here again and let you know when Podsleuth 0.6.7 or newer is easily installable on Ubuntu 10.04.
Just an update, it looks like podsleuth 0.6.7 was recently packaged for Ubuntu, and it should be available through both the stable and the unstable PPAs. Daniel, you can install this updated version by following the instructions here: https://launchpad.net/~banshee-team/+archive/ppa Please report back here once you've had a chance to use the updated Banshee/podsleuth packages. Hopefully your iPod problems are fixed.
Daniel, we believe that this issue has been fixed. Please reopen if this is not the case.
I upgraded to last podsleuth and the iPod gets detected, but Banshee tries all the times to rebuild the DB, destroying it as it is not possible to use the iPod after that. You have to put the iPod in disk mode, and then back to normal mode as the iPod was all the time rebooting without going anywhere. For the moment I will be using Gktpod which has always worked for me.
