GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 550995
Allow files to be dragged directly from Nautilus to an iPod
Last modified: 2018-05-24 13:36:24 UTC
(I thought this was a known issue, but it seems not, opening a new bug.) [ forwarded from http://bugs.debian.org/497592 by Matt Kraai ] If I find a link to an MP3 that I'd like to listen to on my iPod, but don't want to add to my music library (e.g., a news report), I have to perform the following steps: 1. Download the file. 2. Open the folder containing the downloaded file in Nautilus. 3. Drag the file to my music library. 4. Select the file in my music library (which can be difficult, as it's hidden among everything else in my library). 5. Drag the file to the iPod device. 6. Remove the file from the music library. 7. Remove the file from the list of missing files. 8. Empty the trash. I wish Rhythmbox would allow the file to be dragged directly to the iPod device, which would replace step 3 and eliminate steps 4 through 7.

I had no idea that I could even add tracks to my iPod through Rhythmbox until I searched for gtkpod alternatives. Perhaps it would be wise to add more obvious UI options for this.

I think it may be worth pointing out that this is already possible and that you can drag an MP3, or several MP3's directly to your iPod from your file manager. But you cannot do this with any folders (say perhaps several albums containing MP3's). This effectively doubles (or at least considerably lengthens) the amount of time required to transfer albums to an iPod or other similar device. Not all users use the library feature of Rhythmbox, as not all users have sufficient space to store large music collections on their computers. (Particularly on netbooks and small laptops). Not even iTunes requires that everything be imported into the library first before being able to transfer files to an iPod/iPhone etc.
