no sound with sound blaster audigy se and ubuntu 8.04

Please describe the problem: After installing a sound blaster audigy se 24-bit card after the motherboard sound failed. none of the applications that use gstreamer produce any sound. Applications that do work include several games, the flash plugin and mplayer that don't seem to use gstreamer: miro, vlc and totem do not work. In the ubuntu sound preferences the test buttons for conferencing, music and movies, and sound events all produce a single tone when the test button is pressed and ALSA is selected running gstreamer-properties a single tone can be produced with the test button and ALSA selected as the plugin and default as the device. No sound is produced when the plugin is autodetect. Changing the setting in gstreamer-properties tends to mess something up in the card or ALSA which causes all applications that previously worked to play back way too fast and high pitched and still won't make any of the gstreamer applications work. Changing the setting back will not fix it. The only way I have found to fix it is to reboot the whole system. Steps to reproduce: Build a system with ubuntu 8.04 and sound blaster audigy se and try to play any sound with miro,vlc, totem etc. Actual results: No sound Expected results: sound Does this happen every time? yes Other information: gst-feedback produces GStreamer feedback script. That's the expected sound. If it works there, it should work in totem-gstreamer and rhythmbox etc. too. Are you actually using totem-gstreamer and not totem-xine?
