Description Johannes Tögel 2008-08-18 20:12:41 UTC
GNOME seems not to implement the freedesktop.org Autostart Specification (<a href="http://standards.freedesktop.org/autostart-spec/autostart-spec-0.5.html">http://standards.freedesktop.org/autostart-spec/autostart-spec-0.5.html</a>) correctly, because the option OnlyShowIn=GNOME isn't set. This wouldn't be a problem if only GNOME would use the directories given in the freedesktop.org Autostart Specification, or if only GNOME would be installed, but it becomes a problem if KDE 4, which also implements the freedesktop.org Autostart Specification, is installed alongside GNOME: All GNOME Autostart entries are started when logging into KDE 4, which is obviously a problem (See also <a href="https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=163582">https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=163582</a>.

The solution for the problem would be to implement the correct behaviour of setting OnlyShowIn=GNOME for Autostart entries done by the GNOME configuration, *maybe* there also could an option to disable it for certain entries.

Johannes Tögel

P.S.:Sorry if I didn't chose the right program in the bug description, but I don't know exactly which part of GNOME stores the autostart entries.

This is a big issue that should be fixed. Users get confused and irritated by the current messy interaction between KDE 4 and GNOME when it comes to autostart.
Comment 2 Vincent Untz 2008-09-11 16:20:27 UTC
Johannes: sorry, I don't understand the issue. Are you saying that applications added in the autostart list when logged in GNOME should not be started when logging in KDE? (ie, new .desktop files should have OnlyShowIn=GNOME)

(bug 551700 is a valid bug)
Comment 3 Adam Williamson 2008-09-11 16:30:12 UTC
Yes, I believe that's the idea. I think it is sensible that when the user sets an app to autostart using the GNOME tool, it is set by default to only autostart under GNOME; this seems to be the behavior most users who've commented on the KDE bugs, and users who've reported this to Ubuntu and me (Mandriva) expect. Often people want to run very different sets of applications under GNOME and KDE, I don't think it's valid to assume that if a user sets an app to autostart while he's running GNOME, he necessarily wants it to autostart under KDE too.

Seems to be a dupe of bug 551700
