GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 54558
Just thoughts on autocompletion behaviour.
Last modified: 2004-01-28 22:29:15 UTC
The current behaviour, when set to "simplified"; two possible completions: "bugzilla.gnome.org" and "bugzilla.mozilla.org". I start typing "bugzilla"; at about "bugz", autocompletion kicks in. Good so far. However, only the "bugzilla." part is filled in. Now, since one can just keep typing, and ignore completion, I propose that the entire URL before the first / is filled in; if there are multiple possible completions, perhaps choose the one that was most recently accessed? The one that's most often accessed? Randomly? :) Anything would be an improvement, because: Imagine you want to go to bugzilla.gnome.org. The following URLs are available for completion: b.org bu.org bug.org bugz.org bugzi.org bugzil.org bugzill.org bugzilla.org bugzilla.g.org bugzilla.m.org bugzilla.gn.org bugzilla.mn.org bugzilla.go.org bugzilla.mo.org Ad nauseum. Now, autocompletion is pretty much useless. Why bother? :) If it tried to at least guess where the user was going, at least there's a chance it'd be right. If it's based on the date last visited, or better yet, on access frequency, I think it would be an improvement. I can't see any disadvantages, really. Maybe I'm speaking outta my arse :) Forgive me, for it's rather late for me.
I confirm that this is important. To me the current behavior of autocomplete is preety uselesss. It isn't compliant with mozilla autocomplete either. I think that it should show a list, below the location bar of possible autocompletions. However, maybe it should show one in the location bar (most frequent, most recent, user pref). I would like to up the severity and/or priority, since it neutralizes autocomplete for me.
I don't think this is relevant with current versions. Please re-open if you dissagree.
