Description Frederic Peters 2008-07-13 20:39:13 UTC
I'd love to have a notification in some situations ("hey! you plugged a beamer") but the new status icon is (another) abusive use of the notification area.

As stated in gsd-xrandr-manager.c:

  /* FIXME: We may want to make this icon optional (with a GConf key,
   * toggled from a checkbox in gnome-display-properties.
   *
   * Or ideally, we should detect if we are on a tablet and only display
   * the icon in that case.
   */

I am of the opinion it should be disabled by default; I am adding this bug so I can keep track of the problem and provide a patch if I get some time.

I have to agree. I'm using the nv driver, so no xrandr and much less rotations.
But I am still greeted by this useless icon.

I think we may have to bite the bulled and have a

"Me too". I am working in docked mode with an external TTF on my laptop, and I see this icon all the time. Hardware configuration is done so seldomly that it shouldn't be advertised so prominently in the panel, at least not permanently. That's why we have a System -> Preferences menu.

Thank you for considering!

Ditto.  Just kill the icon.

Notification - win
Status icon telling me that I have a monitor connected ("no, really?") - FAIL

Already in svn.
