GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 537117
translation issues
Last modified: 2008-06-11 19:02:09 UTC
after having seen your posting requesting official GNOME inclusion, i started reading the pot file for libgda. libgda contains 835 translatable strings which is a huge burden for translators, so let's make it as easy as possible for them. also, the translation statistics definitely look like libgda needs more translation love: http://l10n.gnome.org/module/libgda . several translation issues i have found and that i'd like to see fixed (it will also reduce the number of strings by about 20): many strings contain the term "DSN", and i have no idea what it means. having a translator comment added to #: ../libgda/gda-config.c:174 msgid "File to use for per-user DSN list" would be nice. see http://live.gnome.org/TranslationProject/DevGuidelines/Use%20comments #: ../libgda/gda-config.c:1096 ../libgda/gda-config.c:1103 msgid "Can't instanciate provider '%s'" typo, must be "instantiate" #: ../libgda/gda-connection.c:189 msgid "GdaMetaStore used by the connection" hmm. maybe a comment "Translators: Don't translate "GdaMetaStore""? #: ../libgda/gda-connection.c:3211 msgid "" "Connection transaction status tracking: no transaction exists for ROLLBACK" #: ../libgda/gda-connection.c:3245 msgid "" "Connection transaction status tracking: no transaction exists for COMMIT" #: ../libgda/gda-connection.c:3269 msgid "" "Connection transaction status tracking: no transaction exists for ADD " "SAVEPOINT" #: ../libgda/gda-connection.c:3294 msgid "" "Connection transaction status tracking: no transaction exists for ROLLBACK " "SAVEPOINT" #: ../libgda/gda-connection.c:3319 msgid "" "Connection transaction status tracking: no transaction exists for REMOVE " "SAVEPOINT" i don't expect the SQL commands to be translated to any other language, so please change this to "Connection transaction status tracking: no transaction exists for %s" see http://live.gnome.org/TranslationProject/DevGuidelines/Make%20messages%20generic #: ../libgda/gda-data-model-bdb.c:630 msgid "" "Custom BDB model implementation is not complete: the 'get_key_part' method " "is missing" #: ../libgda/gda-data-model-bdb.c:659 msgid "" "Custom BDB model implementation is not complete: the 'get_data_part' method " "is missing" #: ../libgda/gda-data-model-bdb.c:752 #, c-format msgid "" "Custom BDB model implementation is not complete: the 'update_key_part' " "method is missing" #: ../libgda/gda-data-model-bdb.c:838 #, c-format msgid "" "Custom BDB model implementation is not complete: the 'update_data_part' " "method is missing" again, see http://live.gnome.org/TranslationProject/DevGuidelines/Make%20messages%20generic #: ../libgda/gda-data-model.c:1124 msgid "The 'NAME' parameter must hold a string value, ignored." #: ../libgda/gda-data-model.c:1163 msgid "The 'SEPARATOR' parameter must hold a string value, ignored." #: ../libgda/gda-data-model.c:1177 msgid "The 'QUOTE' parameter must hold a string value, ignored." #: ../libgda/gda-data-model.c:1186 msgid "The 'FIELD_QUOTE' parameter must hold a boolean value, ignored." #: ../libgda/gda-data-model.c:1269 msgid "The 'OVERWRITE' parameter must hold a boolean value, ignored." msgstr "" again, see http://live.gnome.org/TranslationProject/DevGuidelines/Make%20messages%20generic #: ../libgda/gda-data-model-dsn-list.c:121 #: ../libgda/gda-data-model-dsn-list.c:122 msgid "Connection string" a translator comment would be helpful to not get this wrong. there are several things that i could imagine this to translate to. #: ../libgda/gda-data-model-query.c:667 ../libgda/gda-data-model-query.c:1079 #, fuzzy, c-format msgid "Specified is closed" huh? :-) #: ../libgda/gda-init.c:47 #, fuzzy msgid "Attempt to re-initialize GDA library. ignored." Most of the corrections are now in SVN. However the point mentionned in comment #3 has not been adressed as I don't think it can be done without breaking the genericity of the code (the XML files are not interpreted, just loaded). I hope things will be easier for translators now.
well, if it's not possible it's okay. just wanted to get things improved. but why is this NEEDINFO - forgot the question? :-)
Just needed some more information from you about the points I had not corrected. I'm closing the bug. I'll try to be more carefull about translators in the future! Thanks.
