Description Patrick OCallaghan 2008-05-30 15:57:34 UTC
Currently, Evo enables top-posting in message replies, i.e. the cursor is located at the top of the quoted message (whether or not selective quoting is used). There is a 'top-posting' preference option, but it only affects the insertion of an empty line at the beginning.

I believe this encourages top-posting in replies and should be settable via an option. A counter-argument is that many people like to insert a greeting at the top and then scroll to the bottom, to which I answer that a) not everyone does this, but everyone is paying the price, and b) the existing top-posting option could enable this behaviour if desired.

(Continuing thought from bug #469292) Let's have new option, say called "Place cursor at the bottom of the message", at the same place as is the signature place option, and keep these two settings independent (maybe only if putting signature at the bottom, and cursor also at the bottom, then place cursor just above the signature).
Comment 2 Patrick OCallaghan 2008-05-30 19:25:24 UTC
That would work for me.
Comment 3 Srinivasa Ragavan 2008-06-02 04:25:58 UTC
I dont understand why do you want to auto place the cursor at the bottom? [May be Im not clear]. Is there any email client that does this? I dont want to set new standards here :)
Comment 4 Patrick OCallaghan 2008-06-02 05:25:23 UTC
Thunderbird does it (via an option). It's been a while since I've used anything except Evo and TB so I can't swear to it, but IIRC every other MUA I've ever used also does it (Elm, VM, mh-e, ...), not counting the various webmails which seem to follow Outlook brokenness. I think Evo is more the exception than the rule.

The reason I want the cursor at the bottom is that 9 times out of 10 the first thing I do when replying is scroll to the bottom, because I loathe top-posting. People who have the opposite view, or simply don't care (probably the majority) aren't going to bother, so we get more and more top-posting.

Oh, ok. I never knew it. If so, we too can do it.
Comment 6 Patrick OCallaghan 2008-06-02 12:47:51 UTC
That's what I like to hear :-)

for evolution;

Here we go. I thought I will extend GtkHtml for this, but it finally showed up I will not, so enjoy only one patch.
Comment 8 Milan Crha 2008-06-06 08:57:28 UTC
Err, I forgot to update mail/evolution-mail.schemas.in, but I see the top_signature is not there either, so should be fine :)
Comment 9 Srinivasa Ragavan 2008-06-06 10:06:13 UTC
Milan, I haven't tested. But looks fine. Go ahead and commit it.
Comment 10 Patrick OCallaghan 2008-06-06 22:16:24 UTC
