Description Chow Loong Jin 2008-05-06 17:34:01 UTC
Currently Banshee only transcodes audio files when the format of the source audio file doesn't match the target's format.

I believe Banshee should transcode the file if the source and target's bitrates do not match, especially if the target has a lower bitrate. For some players with a very limited storage capacity, this is dead useful as more files can be added to the player.

If making this the default behaviour isn't desirable, then perhaps at least a checkbox "Transcode if bitrate differs" or something of that sort could be put in the Dap properties dialog.

This would be very useful for adding tracks to a cell phone's memory card. It would also be nice to allow users to override a device's supported formats. Flac is a nice format for desktop use, but sometimes I like to maximize the capacity of my portable player.

I would like to join this bug, because it doesnt only help saving space. There still are players that do not support hight bitrates like 320kbps (e.g. my car Alpine player). I also suggest to add a parameter "max_bitrate" to the .is_audio_player file however I understand that this might be complicated, as every format might have its own bitrate limitations.

I have one simple question to banshee devs. How to force enable the transcoding for every file (regardless of the original format) I copy to the portable device? Is there a simple way to do it?
Comment 6 Luke Mc 2011-05-25 02:02:34 UTC
Forcing would be much appreciated. I have devices that support FLAC but are so cheap (Sandisk devices) that FLAC is pointless. Forcing transcoding would be amazing, as would fixed bitrate.

Also, as I have mixed files at the moment, I would like it where I can force permanent library transcoding, and when I transfer mixed files, files that need to be transcoded are transcoded while other files are being transfered.

These are all simply ideal additions and things I would like to see.

Banshee is not under active development anymore and had its last code changes more than three years ago. Its codebase has been archived.

Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect
reality. Please feel free to reopen this ticket (or rather transfer the project
to GNOME Gitlab, as GNOME Bugzilla is being shut down) if anyone takes the
responsibility for active development again.
