Bug 528324 - Screen draw issue in Ledger View

Description Jason Ahrens 2008-04-16 00:05:52 UTC
Please describe the problem:
I am using Windows XP sp 2. Opening bug report at request of Derek on list.

When opening ledger view on any account each existing entry is separated by a thin double line.

When selecting any existing entry, or selecting the default blank 'new' entry, the double line collapses to a single line.

If the ledger view pane is not full, this "collapsing" causes a "phantom" of the previously viewed data to remain on the screen below where the newly collapsed visible data ends. It seems the pane is not properly "cleared" before the redraw.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open any ledger view that does not fill the full ledger pane. (Note the double line between each entry)
2. Select any item for edit, or new.
3. Notice the double line "collapses" to a single line and leave prior viewed data on the screen.

Actual results:
See problem description.

Expected results:
Depends on if the double line is intentional or a bug. If the double line is intentional, I would expect the pane to clear before redraw.

If the double line is a bug, fixing it would fix this issue.

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

Other information:
I can provide example screenshots or other data on request.

I have not tested this on other platforms, but do imagine it's likely a Windows specific issue. Confirmation or denial of that would be useful.

Thanks for reporting this issue.
Is this a duplicate of bug 432021 or how do them relate to each other?

It does seem that it is all related.

I'm posting some of the text of a conversation on the gnucash-users mailing list. This way that knowledge won't go lost and people finding this bug report will also know about it:

****

This doesn't really bother me but I thought I bring it up:
When I am in any account register and scroll through the transactions, the display blanks out and comes back when I keep scrolling...

****

Do you use Windows or Linux?

I use Windows XP sp2 and I get this time to time as well. I've never
been able to replicate it "at will" though.

****

I've incountered this issue as well. I'm using Gnucash on XP (sp1, i think). I had not mentioned it before, as it didn't have a huge impact on my productivity. Now that someone else has brought it up, I'lll add my two cents. I'll have to check my GnuCash version when I get home.

****

I have the same problem here. Moreover when I click on last
transaction in order for example to modify it, there is a bad "row
refresh", so last rows appears duplicated, even if their "clones"
cannot be clicked.
Windows XP SP2, ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 as video card. I use GnuCash
2.2.4 r16997.

****

That problem I can at least duplicate reliably. When I open any ledger,
all the entries have a thin "double line" between all entries. Selecting
an entry for editing causes the "double line" to collapse to a single
line. If there's any "Extra space" in the window not covered by the
ledger, then I get the 'phantom duplication' as well. Really, it's just
a not-correct redraw.

****

Can you please make sure this issue (and your exact means to
reproduce it) get into bugzilla? Thank you.

****
(It's at this point I openend this bug report)

Hello Derek et al,

this seems pretty closely related to
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=507178<http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=528324>,
which by the way, is still marked as unconfirmed. I've seen quite a few
reports of screen redraw errors under Win XP on this list already...

****

Most bug reports stay at unconfirmed.. We don't really use those
fields much, so it doesn't really mean anything. We don't really
have a team of people trying to reproduce bugs to "confirm" them...
But having such a team would be very useful. Care to start one?

****

Well, I think bug 507178 is probably a duplicate of bug 502649, which is
marked as "new". So there is a little movement at least. As a workaround,
have you tried changing fonts, as dicussed in bug 502649?

****

Interesting, yes. I just changed my font to a 10 pt (from 8) and the
double line, blank scrolling, and phantom entries all seemed to go away.

So, that's a work around. The downside is it affects all programs, not
just GNUCash.

****

Yeah, it's a clumsy workaround. But at least we can confirm that all these weird behaviors are related.

By the way, another workaround is to build GnuCash from source and run it from an MSYS shell, rather than install it from a .exe, but that's much harder than switching your font or simply ignoring the problem.

I tested this with the recently released GnuCash 2.4.0. The double lines no longer appear and I don't seem to get any of the visual glitches you describe anymore. Can you test if you still experience those with the new version ?

(To me it looks like this problem got fixed when bug 502649 was.)

Thank you.

Now that you mention it, I haven't seen this in quite some time...
