GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 528027
DEPS-LIST contains an old package name
Last modified: 2014-08-30 00:11:38 UTC
Hi, i'm installing latest version of garnome under Ubuntu 7.10, and in file DEPS-LIST i found this: libmagick6-dev (tango-icon-theme) However, this package is not present anymore, the correct package name is libmagick9-dev, as you can see: gighi@sedonc:~/garnome-2.22.1/desktop$ sudo apt-get install libmagick6-dev Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package libmagick6-dev is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source However the following packages replace it: graphicsmagick-libmagick-dev-compat libmagick9-dev E: Package libmagick6-dev has no installation candidate Thank you for your work.
Is there a way we can update these to cater for the different distributions GARNOME does build on, after all -- recent GARNOME's still build on Ubuntu 6.06 (libmagick9) as well as 8.04, which now has libmagick10. Just thinking that having deps listed like: libmagick6 | libmagick9 | libmagick10 ... might be a tad confusing to new users. libmagick6 isn't listed in any 'supported' repository though, so users who try the 'smallest number first' theory will still get an error like the one above.
I guess I'd love to rely on magic and todays package managers being at least somewhat smart. I don't know about apt-get, but urpmi for example usually is happy with the number left off entirely. This should work unless there multiple different versions available. We'd need someone familiar with each package manager, to go through the list and canonicalize the deps...
FWIW, the list I recently gathered for Mandriva 2008, and that is floating around somewhere on this machine, has been done with this in mind.
GARNOME has not seen any code changes since 2008: https://git.gnome.org/browse/archive/garnome/log This project is not under active development anymore and got recently archived in GNOME Git. It is currently unlikely that there will be any further active development. Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect reality. Please feel free to reopen this bug report in the future if anyone takes the responsibility for active development again.
