GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 517558
Translation issues with "Other"
Last modified: 2009-02-12 03:22:16 UTC
The word "Other" is based on gender in many languages, including Swedish. It could be both "Annan" and "Annat" based on context. Please make this string context based. #: ../gui/simple-greeter/gdm-language-option-widget.c:177 #: ../gui/simple-greeter/gdm-user-chooser-widget.c:304 msgid "Other..." msgstr "" Other information:
Currently you translate it with "Annat". Until this bug is fixed, I would suggest you use "Annan" instead, since it is right in three cases ("user" twice and "layout" once) while "Annat" is correct in only one case ("language"). The "user" is probably also the most common thing to switch, and thus shown most often. I'm referring to its use in gdm 2.24.0. It still needs to be fixed with context information in the sources to become right in all cases.
I have changed this to Annan now. I also saw that there is one more context using this string. #: ../gui/simple-greeter/gdm-language-option-widget.c:228 #: ../gui/simple-greeter/gdm-layout-option-widget.c:220 #: ../gui/simple-greeter/gdm-user-chooser-widget.c:131 msgid "Other..." msgstr "Annan..."
Something like C_("user", "Other...") would make sense here, indeed. (Dutch also uses gender in some cases, but it doesn't cause problems that often. However, sometimes you end up with very quirky translations just to avoid grammatical errors.)
This is a problem for Danish as well (not that surprising since Danish and Swedish are close). Here the two conflicting Danish translations are "Anden" and "Andet". Please fix this. Regards Kenneth Nielsen
This is a problem for Lithuanian too („Kiti“ vs. „Kitos“). Please fix.
This should be good in trunk. Let me know if you run into any problems.
Great, but please add a hint for translators to see which context it is Maybe you should add a context string for each of language and layout too #: ../gui/simple-greeter/gdm-language-option-widget.c:228 #: ../gui/simple-greeter/gdm-layout-option-widget.c:220 msgctxt "language" msgid "Other..." msgstr ""
In Spanish it can be: "Otro" "Otra" Please provide context.
"Language" and "keyboard layout" have different genders in some languages, so let's make the context for gdm-layout-option-widget.c:220 "keyboardlayout" or whatever...
(In reply to comment #0) > The word "Other" is based on gender in many languages, including Swedish. > Italian language too.
Portuguese is affected too, both in Brazil and in other countries.
Sorry guys. When I went to fix this bug, I did it too quickly and typed the wrong context for the keyboard layout chooser. I've corrected that, and added some translator comments. Hopefully all is well now, and thanks for the quick responses.
