GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 515200
Improve .desktop file
Last modified: 2012-03-05 23:24:18 UTC
The bug has been described on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-volume-manager/+bug/146918 "Most of the descriptions of the startup programs in the default setup are poor: Volume Manager: "Volume manager for removable drives and media" Doesn't describe what it does except "manage", which is vague. The term "Volume" is ambiguous, so this should not be used in the description."
Description is in this file: /usr/share/gnome/autostart/gnome-volume-manager.desktop
The current trunk http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnome-volume-manager/trunk/gnome-volume-properties.desktop.in?revision=1382&view=markup has the following text: _Name=Removable Drives and Media _Comment=Configure management of removable drives and media To my humble self, this at least nominally qualifies as a fix for this bug, although the "manage" term is seen as problematic by the original reporter.
My bad, that's the wrong file; the correct one is at http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnome-volume-manager/trunk/gnome-volume-manager.desktop.in.in?revision=1381&view=markup and does not appear to be fixed at all. Sorry for the confusion.
I'd be happy to propose a patch but I'm not certain I fully understand the role of Gnome Volume Manager. How's this as a first approximation? _Name=Volume Manager _Comment=Control GNOME's handling of removable drives and media I'm basing this suggestion mainly on the README file in the source, which has the following information: gnome-volume-manager is a desktop-level daemon that enforces volume-related policy in response to events received from HAL. Its goal is to implement all functionality as a state-machine in response to asynchronous events from HAL. It is one component in a larger plan to fully integrate all levels of the Linux system, from the kernel on up through the desktop and its applications. gnome-volume-manager comes in two parts: - gnome-volume-manager: the manager daemon itself - gnome-volume-properties: the control panel applet, for configuration
I think g-v-m is disappearing from GNOME so probably not worth messing with it. I think Nautilus is handling everything now.
According to its maintainers, "g-v-m hasn't seen a change in three years, it definitely qualifies as unmaintained." It is highly unlikely that there will be any further active development (especially as functionality has been superseded by other modules). Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping - Please feel free to reopen this bug report in the future if anyone takes the responsibility for active development again.
