Description Baptiste Mille-Mathias 2008-01-30 05:49:44 UTC
#: ../app/about.h:27 ../desktop/gimp.desktop.in.in.h:2
msgid "GNU Image Manipulation Program"
msgstr "GNU Image Manipulation Programme"

A basic translation would be at least "Programme d'édition d'image GNU" but the problem is this string is used in file managers and menus, and this not be intuitive; so I would prefer directly "the GIMP" or "Editeur d'image GIMP".

I saw GNU Image Manipulation Program was already replaced by GIMP in
#: ../app/actions/file-actions.c:106
msgid "Quit the GNU Image Manipulation Program"
msgstr "Quitter GIMP"

The string is translated in French by 'GNU Image Manipulation Programme' to keep the acronym order (G.I.M.P.) but you're right it's not convenient in a menu entry.

In my Ubuntu, the string used in menu is 'Éditeur d'image GIMP' and the tip is 'Crée des images et modifie des photographies', I don't know where this string come from but it's nice.

So ../app/about.h:27 and ./desktop/gimp.desktop.in.in.h:2 mustn't be the same string (or use context information).

'Quitter GIMP' is a tooltip, we can use 'Quitte l'éditeur d'image GIMP'.

Could you explain to me which fields are used in menu entry:
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Application
_Name=GNU Image Manipulation Program
_GenericName=Image Editor
_Comment=Create images and edit photographs

Desktop file in GIMP 2.2

_Name=The GIMP
_GenericName=Image Editor
_Comment=Create and edit images or photographs

Desktop file in GIMP 2.4

_Name=GNU Image Manipulation Program
_GenericName=Image Editor
_Comment=Create images and edit photographs

http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/ar01s05.html

The _Name key is used in file managers and menus and this string is really too long in GIMP 2.4.

"GNU Image Manipulation Program" is the name of the application. If you absolutely think that it is too long, feel free to use the abbreviated form "GIMP".
Comment 4 Stephane Raimbault 2008-02-04 09:55:51 UTC
So GIMP has a new name in GNU Image Manipulation Program 2.4!

The size doesn't matter in about.h but it's really important in gimp.desktop

#: ../app/about.h:27 ../desktop/gimp.desktop.in.in.h:2
msgid "GNU Image Manipulation Program"

Could you add a context translation information to separate these strings?

Thanks.
