GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 512091
Improve description
Last modified: 2008-04-02 03:13:12 UTC
From the thread in gnome-i18n (I'm not quite sure where this description is used): On Sex, 2008-01-25 at 12:49 +0100, daniel g. siegel wrote: > you got it ;) well i think we changed the "pretty-short" summary to > "Cheese is a Photobooth-inspired GNOME application for taking pictures > and videos from a webcam. I think would be better to pick a non-comparing-to-other-programs description. I also think you don't need to mention that the effects are based on 'gstreamer-backend'. Why don't just say: 'It also includes fancy graphical effects' ?
thanks for copying, vincent ;)

i like "Take pictures and videos from your webcam with fancy graphical effects" for the "pretty short summary". how about the "a bit longer short summary"?
ok: we have these three descriptions now: extremely short: "Cheese Webcam Utility" short: "Take pictures and videos from your webcam with fancy graphical effects" long: "Cheese is a GNOME application designed to take photos and videos of you and your friends with your webcam, add special effects to them and share them with your friends and family." feel free to reopen the bug if you have another idea
andre likes "Cheese is a GNOME application designed to take photos and videos with your webcam, add special effects to them and share them with your friends and family." more, because he thinkg mentioning friends twice is overwhelming
Why the "Gnome application" part? I don't like the "friends and family" part either. Random idea: "Cheese uses your webcam to take photos and videos, applies special effects and lets you share the fun with others."
what is bad about the friends and family part? with the gnome thing: you are right, we dont want to limit our users on gnome
(In reply to comment #7) > what is bad about the friends and family part? Some people don't have friends or family. Perhaps they still want to use Cheese with colleagues ;)
summary: extremely short: "Cheese Webcam Utility" short: "Take pictures and videos from your webcam with fancy graphical effects" long: "Cheese uses your webcam to take photos and videos, applies fancy special effects and lets you share the fun with others."
The word "Utility" has little to no meaning, so please don't use it in the name ;)
what else? "tool"?
Just as useless ;) Please be more descriptive. This is the name that will show up in the menus, right?
exactly. do you have a better idea?
fixing the bug with these three descriptions: extremely short: "Cheese Webcam Application" short: "Take pictures and videos from your webcam with fancy graphical effects" long: "Cheese uses your webcam to take photos and videos, applies fancy special effects and lets you share the fun with others."
(In reply to comment #14) > fixing the bug with these three descriptions: > > extremely short: "Cheese Webcam Application" We try hard to not put the name of the programs in the menus, for many reasons. It doesn't translate well, for example.
yeah thats absolutely right.. so what should we put there?
Daniel: I hope you're not asking me, really :-)
i buy you and ice cream!
(In reply to comment #17) > Daniel: I hope you're not asking me, really :-) > vincent, a lot of gnome programs use "[program name] small description", e.g. epiphany, f-spot, ... i understand, that it would be difficult to translate such things well but in my opinion "cheese some short description" would fit well. therefore i would like to use: extremely short: "Cheese Webcam Application" short: "Take pictures and videos from your webcam with fancy graphical effects" long: "Cheese uses your webcam to take photos and videos, applies fancy special effects and lets you share the fun with others."

Bad examples: f-spot is there for branding use, I guess; epiphany use it because it can be confusing wrt Firefox. > i understand, that it would be difficult to translate such things well but in > my opinion "cheese some short description" would fit well. So I still disagree :-)
how much ice cream do i have to buy you, in order to get an ok from you?
You don't have to get an ok from me. It's fine if we disagree, you know :-)
Take photos and videos with your webcam svn commit ctrl+d kthxbye
extremely short: "Take photos and videos with your webcam" short: "Take pictures and videos from your webcam with fancy graphical effects" long: "Cheese uses your webcam to take photos and videos, applies fancy special effects and lets you share the fun with others." is that ok for everybody?
"photos and videos" vs. "pictures and videos" "from your webcam" vs. "with your webcam" "fancy graphical effects" vs. "fancy special effects" You should make these terms consistent. Also, how does Cheese actually let me "share the fun with others"? Why don't we just cut through the sugar coating and have just one description? "Take photos and videos with your webcam, with fun graphical effects".
we will use "Take photos and videos with your webcam, with fun graphical effects" thanks alex
