Description Rui Matos 2008-01-13 19:40:43 UTC
NetworkManager provides its own icons for vaious network statuses. Currently it uses names like (I removed a bunch of numbered ones):

/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-adhoc.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-device-wired.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-no-connection.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-signal-00.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-signal-100.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-signal-25.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-signal-50.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-signal-75.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-stage01-connecting01.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-stage01-connecting02.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-stage02-connecting01.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-stage02-connecting02.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-stage03-connecting01.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-stage03-connecting11.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-vpn-connecting01.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-vpn-connecting02.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/apps/nm-vpn-lock.png

I think it makes sense to agree on standard names for these and then provide them in gnome-icon-theme.

As a start I think that the names should be changed like nm-* to network-* and putting them on status/ where there are already some other network-* ones on g-i-t.

Probably a good idea; the only interesting thing here is going to be the number of animation frames for connecting and vpn-connecting to standardize on.

Not sure if gnome icon theme is the proper place for these. I would rather suggest to keep shipping the icons with NM, have a default, tango styled set installing to local hicolor [1], and perhaps provide the existing bluecurve/echo along too.

gnome-icon-theme only aims to cover the very core icon needs defined in the icon naming spec.

I am very happy to give a hand with the tango-styled set if the time is finally right.

I guess this is obsolete, can we close this?

The status/signal strength icons are addressed in bug #504822
