This was a new upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10 and I was checking utilities and fixing previous problems such as no sound.

I added the line " options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack " to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file and rebooted ( as I did in 7.04 ). CD player works now and I get sound.

The problem still exists that sound comes from both the external speakers and the headphones though.

The issue with the awful error message(s) is known and has been fixed in GStreamer CVS (-base and -good).

This doesn't sound like a GStreamer problem, more like an ubuntu/alsa issue. Try the various ubuntu support fora.
