I'm not sure that having a notation system in Rhythmbox is a good idea.

Notation system is a good idea when a group of users have to give a notation : that way you can calculate an average notation and have an idea of the popularity of the thing that has been notated.

But notation seems useless when only one person has to give a notation. You don't care of knowing that you like that song of madonna so much that you would give it a 18/20, whereas that one is just good enough for 12/20. Nobody think that way.

That's probably the reason why i don't know a single person that give a notation of his music in Rhythmbox

Instead, we could imagine a simple system to mark prefered songs. The user could mark the songs he prefers with something like the star in Gmail. That system would be a binary one : the song would be marked as prefered or not, wihout the possibilty to give a notation from 0 to 5.

Do you have any research or anything backing up your assertion that "nobody think that way"? I certainly seem to think that way.

Techniques that work for classifying email don't necessarily work for classifying songs.

i've given my point of view concerning rhythmbox that i use and like, based upon the fact that "i don't know a single person that give a notation of its music in Rhythmbox" (which is true)

i don't pretend to know The Only Truth

As i said, it doesn't seem usefull to me to be able to notate my songs. I don't notate my bookmarks in my web-navigator either. Notation system doesn't seem appropriate in these cases to my mind

Maybe that report could be discussed, or not.

Anyway, thanks for that great software and sorry for my english

since we had 2 different points of view, i've made a little poll thanks to Ubuntu Brainstorm http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/2633/
it looks like you're the one who is right !
